Tara Projects has been making a meaningful impact for Artisans in India since the 1970s. Tara was founded with the aim of creating avenues of economic growth for economically disadvantaged Artisans in Delhi and its surrounding areas. Today, the organization has extended its community-changing activities to neighboring states, too. Since its inception, Tara has actively worked to provide needed support services to Artisans based on the principles of fair trade. They also focus on advocating for the dignity of all people through human rights work and education opportunities. Tara is a powerful force for good in India, working toward eradicating poverty by fighting against worker exploitation and illiteracy. “Make Trade Fair” is the motto Tara lives by, and they continue to lead the way in this beautiful endeavor.

  • In 2023, India surpassed China to become the most populous country in the world, with 1.4 billion people. Its people represent incredible cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity, as do the country’s 28 states. India has made great contributions to higher math, is the home of chess, and boasts the world's largest film industry (Bollywood). The country has a rich history of handcrafts dating back to 5000 BC, including techniques like weaving, pottery, jewelry-making, and metalworking.

Flourishing World Initiative Grant Recipient

  • During the COVID pandemic, grants from Noonday helped Tara distribute over 2,500 food kits and 2,300 health kits each month for Artisans, their families, and fellow community members.
  • In addition, consistent orders from Noonday during this time helped Tara’s Artisans be able to continue working from home while financially supporting their families.
  • “We do not have words to thank you all enough,” Moon (Tara CEO) says. “The orders and emergency support helped us to continue to work, retain the staff, and support the Artisans.”

  • Sunita
    Sunita is a true entrepreneur — but after being married at just 14 to a husband who abused her, she believed she had little to offer. She only knew she didn’t want her daughter Vandana to face the same challenges she had. When Sunita began working at Tara, her talents began to shine. Today, she is a workshop leader who provides dignified work to women like her. What’s more, her work has ensured that Vandana received the education she never had — and today Vandana is following in her mother’s footsteps as a bold advocate for health and education!
  • Sofiya
    Sofiya always dreamt of an independent life. When she was 18, she begged her father to let her work at Tara projects. Although he initially opposed the idea, eventually Sofiya’s persistence convinced him. At the workshop, Sofiya learned about her rights – and grew into a capable and independent woman. When her father tragically passed away, Sofiya was proud to be able to provide for her family in his place. She has continued to succeed in her work, and is now one of the workshop’s star Artisans.
